Camp Starlight

Camp Starlight takes place on September 12th -15th, 2019.

What better way to cap off your Summer than with a weekend of rustic camping and knitting workshops with two of the most talented designers around? Below you’ll find all the details you need to sign up for our second annual Camp Starlight with Andrea Mowry and Lesley Robinson. (Dreareneeknits and Knitgrafitti)

This year’s workshops are going to be team taught and center around shawl design:

On the first day of Camp Starlight we will all gather to kick off a weekend of shawls and brioche! While Lesley from Knit Graffiti start things off with the how-to and some shawl shaping, Andrea of DreaReneeKnits will enhance your tool kit with the beautiful bouncy skill of brioche!

Day 1: Shawl Design Unwrapped w/Lesley - Choose your own shawl adventure!!  Have you been knitting for a while, but have some ideas of your own that you’d like to explore?  In this class, I will teach several basic shawl shaping techniques so that you can walk away with enough knowledge to pursue your own design dreams!  Taught workshop-style, we will go over the most traditional and popular shawl shapes, and then you can choose your favorite to work on for the remainder of class. We will even briefly go over how to apply your favorite stitch patterns within the shawl shaping to create beautifully breath-taking designs!

Day 1: Beginner Brioche w/ Andrea - Find out what all the fuss is about! In this class we will tackle two color brioche so you can jump into all of those super fun brioche projects you've been eyeing on Ravelry! No previous experience is needed. If you can knit, purl, slip a stitch and do a yarnover -then you are ready for brioche!

On the final day of Camp Starlight, while Lesley helps you to level up your brioche in the advanced class, Andrea will share her favorite shawl tips to round out your shawl lovin' education!

Day 2: Shawl Finishing Class w/ Andrea - In this class I will share some of my favorite tips for making shawls you can't wait to wrap up in! Including how to achieve flexible edges, 2 different bind offs, blocking and wearing your shawls!

Day 2: Advanced Brioche :: Two-color Brioche Lace w/ Lesley - Satisfy your brioche cravings with modern two-color brioche lace!  In this class, we will briefly cover the basics of two-color brioche and working with two different colored yarns.  Color theory and advice about choosing the right yarn for your project will be covered as well.  The main focus of the class will be learning and working the most commonly-used increases and decreases of brioche knitting to create gorgeous brioche lace fabric.  We will be starting my most popular shawl pattern, Sizzle Pop, the triangle version.  Together, we will work through the pattern, both written instructions and how to read brioche lace charts.  Then you can take it home to continue working on it and have a finished piece that will delight and inspire!

As in the prior year, the participants will be divided into two groups. If you have someone you’d like to be with in your group, please let us know!

This all-inclusive workshop will be held at the Vernonia Springs Campground 45 minutes west of Portland, Oregon. There will be 2 full days of workshops on Friday and Saturday.  There will be morning yoga sessions all three days in a gorgeous yoga loft in the straw bale log structure. This year, we’ve also added two afternoon sessions. All meals, Thursday dinner through Sunday breakfast, are provided onsite with dietary restrictions accommodated.

Important Accommodation Information

Camp starlight is a rustic retreat with the majority of campers staying in tents on site. (You must bring your own tent or rent one) If you are uncomfortable camping, this may not be the retreat for you. There are 2 lovely showers and bathrooms onsite for everyone to use. There are 5 yurts and 5 side-wall tents available on a first come first served basis. If you are planning to share a yurt or side wall tent, only one person in your party needs to register for one. Others in your party need only sign up for a tent site and then notate on the registration form that they are sharing a yurt or side wall tent.  Please visit the Vernonia Springs website for specific information on the yurt layouts. RV’s will be accommodated with prior approval for a $35 per night fee, though there are no services or hookup, and you will be walking a few hundred yards to the main camp area. If you’d like to bring an RV, sign up for a tent space, then contact us with your request. There are a limited number of spaces for those who would like to camp with us, but not participate in workshops. You can sign up for these when registration opens.

You must provide your own transportation to and from the site. Vernonia Springs is about 45 minutes -1 hour from Portland by car. Send us an email after you’ve registered if you are interested in finding a carpool.
