She will show you how to use charts and drawings to design a one-of-a-kind colorwork masterpiece. The second day consists of troubleshooting your pattern and learning the best techniques for a beautiful finished piece. Then there will be some time for luxurious knitting with Caitlin and your group.
Annie Claire Rowden of By Annie Claire will guide you through two of her signature workshops using found, foraged and natural dyes.
Introduction to Natural Dyeing
In this class we will get our toes (yarn) wet and discover the basics of natural dyeing. From understanding whole dye plant material to extracts, mordants and pH, you will walk away from the dye pots feeling confident you can do it on your own at home.
We will discuss a simple history and the vocabulary associated to natural dying, different types of fiber and their role in the dying process, and the basic tools needed. We will use whole plant dye material to create an array of colours and dye mini skeins of yarn. We will touch on what extracts are, how to plan to dye for a certain project as well as caring for your natural colours.
No prior experience needed, just a love of natural colour!
Bundle-dyed blanks (not just for socks!)
Learn to unlock the secrets of certain flowers, leaves, roots and bark as we use their pigments to eco print sock blanks*. Using just a mordant, pressure, and steam we will capture beautiful colours on our fiber, all the while using very little water and dyestuff. We will look at all the tools needed, discuss which plants are more suited than others, and then get to the dyeing. Let your creativity run free as you set up, bundle and progress your sock blank. And then the real magic unfolds as we unbundle our fiber and see what developed!
*Sock blanks are two strands of yarn knitted into a piece of fabric which when dyed, and then unraveled, will create two perfectly matching socks.
