Printmaking with Haily Bailey

Printmaking is a versatile and adaptable art medium that can be done with just about any tools. In this course, we will go over methods of creating prints inspired by nature, including direct printing with natural found objects in nature and reduction linocut block printing. Students will create two swatches of hand-printed fabric which can be used to create anything from a drawstring pouch to handmade clothing or home décor. We will discuss different techniques for creating block prints, materials that can be used, and ways to incorporate printmaking with a variety of other art forms.

Granny Squares with Hailey Bailey

They’re not just for Grandma! Granny Squares are taking over and are more versatile than ever. This course walks through the process of creating modern, fun projects out of granny squares, from the steps to begin a square to construction and finishing touches. Students will learn techniques including magic ring, crocheting in the round, creating shapes (circles, squares, hexagons), color changing methods, and how to adapt a granny square pattern to any size. This course also includes instructions to create a few different projects using granny squares, including a fanny pack, tote bag, and cardigan.

Hailey Bailey and is a crochet pattern designer and indie yarn dyer residing in Salem, OR, with husband Jeff, son Archer, and many animal children! Art has always been her own therapy and helped her through some of the hardest moments of her life.

Psychology of Color: Color Theory for Makers with Emily Lymm

The psychology of color asks why you are drawn to certain colors. And how much of that is influenced by our environment? Let’s become empowered to break that cycle with some advanced color theory and identify how to make clothes that truly represent our unique personalities and tastes. We will apply our newfound color theory by creating knitted coasters using Linen stitch to achieve a woven look. This method is quick and easy.

Eco-Bundle Natural Dying with Emily Lymm

Join the natural dyeing workshop and learn how to create a stunning pattern on a silk scarf using all-natural materials like flowers, bark, and bugs. You will be guided by Emily, a professional natural dyer, and learn the art of bundle dyeing. Plus, you get to take home a unique and beautiful silk scarf while gaining valuable knowledge about natural dyeing techniques. Bring your own foraged materials or dye plants from your garden to try. All materials will be supplied.

Emily Lymm, an ally and advocate of the Slow Fiber Movement, is passionate about creating intentionally sustainable, naturally hand-dyed yarn. With over 20 years of graphic design experience, she has developed a keen eye for color-building skills that she now applies in her dyeing process. She has accumulated a wealth of knowledge on color theory and curated her learning into actionable and easy-to-understand concepts for makers.

Important Accommodation Information

Camp starlight is a rustic retreat with many campers staying in tents on site. You must bring your own tent and it must be waterproof. Weather can be hard to predict this time of year. We’ve had extremely rainy camps and warm, gloriously sunny ones! Please keep this in mind when choosing to attend camp and plan accordingly. If you are uncomfortable camping, this may not be the retreat for you. There are 2 lovely ADA showers and bathrooms onsite for everyone to use, plus 2 more outdoor showers. 5 yurts and 5 side-wall tents are also available at registration on a first come, first served basis. If you are planning to share a yurt or side wall tent, only one person in your party needs to register for one. Others in your party need only sign up for a tent site and then notate on the registration form that they are sharing a yurt or side wall tent.  Please visit the Vernonia Springs gallery for photos of yurt and sidewall layouts. If you’d like to bring an RV, trailer, or camper, sign up for a tent space. (There is no longer an extra fee for this.) Important note: there are no services or hookups, and you will be walking a couple hundred yards to the main camp area. There are also a limited number of tent/rv spaces for those who do not wish to participate in workshops, but would still like to camp with us. You can sign up for these when registration opens.Vernonia Springs gallery
